Udawalawa elephant safari

Up at 5.45 a.m for the two and a half hour drive to the elephant reserve. Our hotel provided us with a smooth car and driver – a step up from yesterday’s tuk tuk adventure – and four pieces of fruit, a cup cake and a bottle of water. This was pre breakfast. When we arrived we were ushered into the Grand Hotel for our real breakfast. Then it was time to drive into the park in a four wheel drive Jeep. We began to see elephants immediately. I don’t know why but they are one of the most endearing animals on the planet. Having said that we were not allowed out of our vehicle. They can be a tad dangerous.

Hard to believe this love bug would hurt anyone. Or this one.

Or this one.

They have over 400 elephants here and 40 odd leopards and lots of crocodiles. We missed out on the leopards and crocodiles but saw lots of beautiful birds.

We saw spotted deer and water buffalo.

Here I am with an elephant – albeit a long way in the distance.

I am always amazed when nothing goes wrong on holidays. We zipped around the park having a fine old time but one of the Jeeps up in front of us was not so lucky.

Happily, we had a quite cautious driver. After two and a half hours in the park, we had lunch and then visited the rehab area for sick or baby elephants. It was lovely to see the elephants scampering up to be fed powdered milk through funnels and plastic tubes.

We jumped back into our four wheel drive.

Back into our car for the long trip back to the hotel just in time for a quick dip before dinner.
